Irish artist Wallis Bird has been enrapturing audiences for over a decade. Nominated for a Choice Music Prize at home in 2017, she’s also been making big waves in mainland Europe. The same year saw her win the 2017 Deutsche Musikautorenpreis - a national award chosen by composers and awarded to their peers - a huge achievement for a non-German. Now based in Berlin, Wallis released her fifth studio album ‘Home’ in September 2016 and has been touring relentlessly all over the world since its release.

Her irrepressible energy on stage is one of her trademarks; even the Irish Times once noted it could ‘kickstart an entire economy’. In 2016, she played a 12-hour free gig in aid of refugee charities in Berlin, even finding enough strength to play an encore. Never your average troubadour, Wallis already has two Meteor Awards (National Irish Music Prize) to her name, as well as a previous Choice nomination, and has toured with the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela, Billy Bragg, The Gossip & Emilliana Torrini. Though you might not catch another 12-hour show anytime soon, you can be sure that few can enchant an audience the way she can. She plays Upstairs at The White Horse with her full band on Thursday January 25th as part of the Ballincollig Winter Music Festival 2018.

Kaia Kater is lauded for being one of the youngest performers in the roots scene, and at 22 years old, there’s not much arguing her progeny. But what’s special is that she’s blowing up the roots music scene in spite of her age, not because of it. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the national spotlight on both Canadian and American soil. Kaia’s individualized approach to the traditional music of Canada and America is fully grounded in a deep respect for the genre. As she traces the connections between the two countries, and between the past and present, Kaia Kater finds the pulse that runs through the Appalachian Mountains.
